Character Name: Lan Wangji (courtesy name), Lan Zhan (birth name)
Canon: The Untamed (the live action version of Mo Dao Zu Shi)
Canon Information:
A wiki does exist for the series but it lacks detail in synopsis: https://t.co/FzpzVO5aW5?amp=1
Canon information is sparse in English so I’m going to do my best to summarize:
The Untamed (live action version of Mo Dao Zu Shi) takes place in an unnamed dynastic period in China. In this world, spirits and demons of various kinds exist and are battled by ‘cultivators’ who utilize magic that feeds off their ‘golden core’ the source of their spiritual energy that grows and develops with study and practice. The types of magic utilized depends on individual ability and the specialties of the cultivator’s ‘Sect’.
Lan Wangji is part of the Gusu Lan Clan, meaning he was born into the Sect and is a member by both bloodline and study. Gusu Lan Sect is known for their discipline and strict adherence to 3000 rules that include the prohibition of drinking, promiscuity, overeating, affiliation with cultivators practicing outside the orthodox path, the upholding of justice, etc.
His mother died when he was very young, followed by his father and he grew up a very devoted and serious child with little disruption until the arrival of Wei Wuxian of Yunmeng Jian Sect and his fellow disciples for three months of lectures as Gusu Lan Sect when Lan Wangji was 16/17. While Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian’s lack of discipline incredibly irritating, he is intrigued by his cultivation abilities and intellect. The intrigue becomes respect and later on becomes affection as they, along with disciples from their own and other Sects, set off to investigate the alarmingly greater incidents of evil spirits and spiritual disturbances. Lan Wangji considers his life very much divided between before and after the arrival of Wei Wuxian.
After the destruction of the Gusu Lan Sect and the attacks on the other Sects by the power hungry Qishen Wen Clan who is searching for the remaining pieces of the powerful Yin Metal, Lan Wangji spends three months looking for Wei Wuxian who was rumored to be captured and thrown into the Yiling Burial Mounds. He finds an altered Wei Wuxian, no longer using sword techniques but instead a flute in what looks very much like demonic cultivation. Despite not understanding why he would do such a thing, Lan Wangji continues to try and defend and protect him, going against his own Clan’s rules. He continues to try and help him in the aftermath of the destruction of the Qishen Wen Clan, and the purge of even the innocent Clan members which results in Wei Wuxian’s defection and creation of his own small Sect made of up the Wen Clan members he’d rescued.
In the absence of the Qishen Wen Sect, there is power to be grabbed and the fervor and schemings of the other Sects, particularly the Lanling Jin Sect, cause Wei Wuxian to be targeted for the power he has amassed using his Stygian Tiger Seal and his new form of cultivation. Lan Wangji is caught between his beloved friend and the other Sects and in the end, cannot stop the destruction and death of Wei Wuxian. In the aftermath, filled with rage and grief, he stands against his own Clan, injuring 33 members in his attempts to protect the remains of Wei Wuxian’s home and memory and is severely punished with whipping and three years of seclusion. When the three years are up, he immediately sets forth to try and find Wei Wuxian’s remains or any trace of his spirit. He arrives to Asgard two days after getting drunk (a very uncommon occurrence) and disfiguring himself with the same brand used on Wei Wuxian years before.
Canon Point: The end of year three after Wei Wuxian’s death. Skipped over in The Untamed but referred to in episode 43 in more detail.
Age: 23
God Houses:
1. Odin (chosen) - Lan Wangji was raised and trained in the Gusu Lan Sect which prized logic and discipline above all. He was a devoted disciple, spending hours studying history and cultivation methods with the intention to educate disciples of his own, someday.
2. Heimdall - Lan Wangji is a skilled fighter in both the sword discipline and the Chord Assasination technique of the zither. He is exceedingly loyal to whatever or whomever he devotes himself to (based on what he feels is ‘good’ and ‘just’).
Personality:
When Lan Wangji was six years old, his mother died. Up until her death, he’d only been permitted to visit her once a month and despite being told she was ‘gone’ and despite eventually understanding she was not coming back, he kneeled in front of her house every month. No amount of persuasion or punishment could dissuade him. Lan Wangji, as his older brother has said, is extremely stubborn. His nature, separate from his childhood trauma, is that of deep introversion to the point that voicing his thoughts and opinions can be difficult and sometimes borderline painful. His inability to express himself and his blunt way of communicating often isolates him, sometimes even on purpose. But the stillness and quiet should not be confused with placidity as he has a steely and unwavering devotion to what he considers ‘good’ and ‘just’. For the majority of his life, that devotion has been to the principles of Gusu Lan Sect but even then, if what he found to be ‘good’ be it his devotion to his mother’s memory or an argument he found logical, nothing could dissuade him.
Lan Wangji’s devotion, once earned, is unwavering. In the case of Wei Wuxian, despite turning against his own Clan in his defense, he harbors deep regret and shame over seeming to take a neutral position at times. He has never made friends easily and it is mostly due to Wei Wuxian’s incessant pestering and refusal to be pushed away that a friendship developed at all. The affection that Lan Wangji develops turns to a deep love and although it hurts to feel it is not returned in the same way, he is entirely prepared to spend a lifetime being Wei Ying’s friend in any way it is offered. This is not to say, he doesn’t lose his temper, it’s just less obvious to those not familiar with him. He is fiercely protective over the few people he allows close to him and will not stand for poor treatment of those who cannot protect themselves. He also has a jealous nature which confounds him as it is so rarely provoked due to him purposefully keeping people at arm’s length.
In the three years after Wei Wuxian’s death, along with the healing from his wounds comes a greater understanding of his feelings for his lost friend. Behaviors and indulgences that would have seemed frivolous or unseemly are cultivated, such as the care and affection for the bunnies in Gusu Lan that Wei Wuxian had been so fond of. His priorities shifted from the attempts to uphold of every one of the 3000 Gusu Lan Sect principles to the nurturing of the parts of his personality that had been stifled in his strict upbringing such as affection and an examination of his own feelings, separate from the logic and discipline that had always been held in higher regard by his Sect. These changes are not obvious, he is still centered and and no action is done or words spoken that is not purposeful and efficient, but the shift in his heart can be seen to the few he’s let close.
