For Ahn

The more Lan Wangji thinks about the night of the attack, the more he realizes he perhaps ought to have handled his interaction with Lee-gonxi with more...delicacy. He realizes that perhaps Lee-gonxi is unused to bloodshed and magic and flying and that it may have all been too much without proper explanation.

He still does not know how to use the communication device supplied by the city so he simply arrives at the same door he had deposited Lee Ahn at and knocks, wondering if a letter ought to have been sent prior but unsure how to do so without relying on the same magic he does not know if is appropriate. Learning the customs of an entirely different world is overwhelming.

He folds his hands neatly behind his back and waits, sword well out of sight as he attempts to look as non-threatening as possible.

Ahn has been hiding away in his apartment half out of fear and...well, mostly out of fear. The danger has passed, but he's not only dealing with the violence enacted upon him, but everything that happened on Halloween night. Magic is real, and he'd almost died because he has no control over his power. There are moments when one revelation weighs heavier on his mind than the other, but things are mostly starting to swing in favor of putting himself down for what happened.

He really needs to do something about his psychometry, and he needs to do it without any help or support from his friends and family. But, that is much harder than anticipated, mostly because Ahn can't bring himself to do it. So, he sits in his apartment for days, no Sungmo to bother, no White Snow to cuddle with, no Daebong to call at any time of the day or night. It's easier to wallow.

Ahn is lying on his couch, going through old photos and videos of Jaein on his phone, when there's a loud knock at the door. It startles him enough that he drops his phone onto his face, the hard screen giving the bridge of his nose a good knock.

"Aish-- I'm coming!" he calls out as he gets up, throwing his phone onto the coffee table with a huff as he heads to the door.

When a quick peek through the eye hole provides a view of dark hair and white robes, Ahn lets out a surprised sound and opens the door quickly. "Lan Wangji?"

Ahn returns the bow and has a smile for Wangji when he straightens again. This is definitely a surprise, but not entirely unwelcome.

"No, I'm not occupied." Ahn shuffles backwards, opening the door and holding an arm out to invite Wangji in. "Please, come. I don't-- I've never had guests so I don't really have anything to entertain you with, I just have water, if that's okay?"

Ahn knows how to cook, and he knows how to clean -- skills forced on him as a teen in the orphanage -- but actually entertaining guests is way beyond his skill set.

Ahn closes the door as Wangji walks in, then quickly moves ahead, taking a look around the apartment just in case. At least his own bedroom door is closed and hiding away the mess he's allowed to grow; it's the only space he really allows himself to keep messy, a habit he'd grown up with and finds hard to shed even when living on his own.

His worries fade when Wangji explains his reason for visiting, and Ahn turns to give him his full attention again. "Oh, that's...thank you. For coming to check on me."

Truthfully, Ahn has needed time to process everything. He's been processing so hard, he hasn't really spent much time out and about.

"Yes, I had to take some time to process it all. And it's not just-- not just you and your magic and all the flying. Or the bloodshed, I mean, that was bad too, but that's just blood, I can handle that, it's--" Ahn runs a hand through his hair in a frustration for how much he's going on and on without being able to stop. "It's being here, in this city and away from everyone I know, and then there's a cult trying to murder people, and my friend has magic and it really is all a lot to handle."

Ahn lets out a heavy sigh and his arms fall to his sides. "And, uh...yes, an explanation would be really nice. Whatever you want to talk about. I'd like to hear about it?"

Wangji is so matter of fact about it, and that ultimately makes it easy for Ahn to simply accept everything he is being told. Yes, he's experienced the magic for himself -- he was flown home on a flying sword -- but it's quite another to wrap his mind around another world full of magic as something normal.

Compared to a life where his own psychometry only seems to have brought him pain, it sounds almost too good to be true.

"No, we don't...not really." Ahn hesitates, nerves lighting up again as he considers maybe telling Wangji about his gift. He seems like he would accept it and not think Ahn insane. "Magic is not considered real, in my world. But I have...I have a gift, though."

Ahn turns away as his hands shake with the reality of what he's just done, what he's said aloud. He moves into the living room, gesturing for Wangji to follow to the couch. "Come, sit?" He falls into the couch, legs curling up underneath him and he gestures at the other end of the couch, offering Wangji the seat.

Wangji doesn't have to say as much -- he radiates the sort of uptight, respectful demeanor that Ahn knows means he would never tell a secret unless he really, truly had to. But it's nice to hear out loud, and it soothes the nerves that are causing his hands to tremble.

"We call it psychometry," he explains haltingly. "If I touch someone, skin to skin--" Ahn holds a hand up and wiggles his fingers, "I can see some memory of theirs. Usually something painful, or some trauma. It happens with objects too, but not as much. Those, those are mostly random memories from others who may have touched the object."

Ahn shrugs and tucks his hands into the front pocket of his sweatshirt, feeling a bit relieved to have said it out loud, but still...a bit small. It sounds so simple compared to Wangji, who has a magic flute and a flying sword.

"I don't know how I got the gift, or why. I could just suddenly do it, when I was five years old. And in my world, it's not normal. Nobody else can do this. Nobody that I know of, anyway, I haven't exactly told that many people about it."

It's nice to hear the sympathy-- in fact, it's a huge relief. Ahn has told nobody in Darrow of his power so far, and the burden of carrying it alone has only gotten heavier over time. Not that he wants to burden Wangji with it, but it feels good that someone knows.

"Thank you," he says with a small smile, one that barely reaches his eyes. "And no, I can't block it. I was trying to get better at using it at and mastering it before I came here to this city."

"Oh, no, I really haven't thought about that." He's a little embarrassed to admit as much to Wangji, who so obviously has mastered controlling himself to a ridiculous degree. Ahn can barely sit still sometimes.

"I wasn't really serious about it before," Ahn admits. That is quite the understatement; he'd been ready to cheat his way through the police entrance exam using his power before Jaein had caught and stopped him. "But that man that tried to kill me, he touched my cheek and it froze me. If you can help me so that doesn't happen again, I would like that."

"Do you think that's something that can help?"

Meditation and aligning his qi is all so beyond Ahn, and he's not really sure why he didn't think about it before. He's never really had any reference to look to for this before, and without Sungmo to give him suggestions he's not sure which way to go.

He might as well take what Wangji can give, if only to try it and see if anything works.

"I'm not good at sitting still, but I think I can do it." Ahn thinks for a moment, then adds, "I can try to do it."

Ahn may not know Wangji too well yet, but he'd figured Sungmo's tiny expressions over time, before they had both been comfortable enough for Sungmo to be truly emotionally bare in front of Ahn. He has training in reading stone faces.

He notices the way Wangji's face changes at the mention of Wuxian....but he'll leave it alone, for now. Just because Wangji is trying to helping him.

"No, there wasn't." Ahn thinks about it, then adds, "my hyung tried, but we were mostly guessing. Nobody has powers in my world, that we know of, and I didn't know a single other soul who can do what I do."

Ahn lifts his hands and wiggles his fingers in the space between them. "These are one of a kind."

Ahn opens his mouth to respond but finds that he has nothing to say, really. It's possibly the kindest thing he has ever heard in regards to his power, and though Wangji's is different and he obviously was brought up differently, he understands it, somehow.

He's never known what it felt like to be understood.

He ducks his head, staring at couch cushion as it blurs beneath a film of tears. "I was five years old when I got my power. My parents had just died. I didn't understand it, and nobody could tell me what was happening. They were scared when I would use it and made me feel like I was a monster. I just wanted to help people."

"Thank you." Ahn laughs a little, sniffs, and wipes his eyes with the heels of his covered hands. Sungmo had explained to him that people were afraid by what they couldn't understand, but then he'd left - and the memory of those words were not nearly enough to help face the void of loneliness that life in the orphanage became. "I felt that way for a long time. I still feel like it sometimes."

Maybe his power didn't make him a monster, but he'd certainly acted monstrous enough to Jaein because of what he'd learned with it. The memory of the last things he'd said to her had been terrible.

"You grew up training with your magic all your life?" Ahn tries to think of where he would be or what he could do now if he'd had years of training, and he can't picture it. The idea of having any sort of control over his powers still feels so ridiculously out of reach.

Ahn takes the cloth and just holds it for a moment as he listens to Wangji's answer.

"You're like a prince," he says lightly as he dries his eyes, glad for some small bit of levity. He's not sure he can even really tease Wangji yet, but he's becoming comfortable enough to try. "You didn't do anything else? It was just studying your entire life?"

"Wow," Ahn mutters, taking in the mention of demons and monsters. Knowing Wangji, he means that with utter truth and Ahn has no choice but to believe it.

"So...so practical application, you mean hunting and fighting demons? Really?"

Yes, of course Wangji fought demons as needed and moves right on past that as if he's talking about just another chore he had to do as a child. All things considered, it probably was.

"Probably," he agrees, shifting slightly so his legs don't fall asleep too soon. "I've been told I have attention issues and I'm not the best student to have." He gives Wangji a small smile. "I apologize in advance."

That's reassuring, and Ahn feels a little less pressure to try to be a perfect pupil - not that he really knows what that is. Maybe someone who actually listens, for once.

"Ah, recently I've been thinking about that," he says, leaning back against the couch as he relaxes a little more. "I wanted to help people with my power, like helping the police to solve crimes. I've tried in the past, but my power is too unstable. I'm no use to anyone if I can't control it or don't know what I'm seeing."

His many, many failures in the morgue trying to help made that point very clear.
